Namhae is Korea’s fifth largest island, renowned for its slower pace of life, beautiful sea, and stunning natural landscapes. The drive around the island is considered one of the most scenic routes in Korea, featuring rugged ocean views, dense forests, quaint fishing villages untouched by tourism, and picturesque paddy fields. The entire island is truly a hidden gem. Namhae is surrounded by 79 smaller islands, providing unique ocean views. Additionally, it lies at the heart of the Hallyeohaesang Marine National Park, which extends from Geojedo Island in South Gyeongsang Province (Gyeongsangnam-do) to Yeosu in South Jeolla Province (Jeollanam-do). While Namhae is often associated with the ocean and its crystal clear waters, the island was historically known as Hwajeon, meaning “fields of flowers.” During spring, the mountains are adorned with beautiful and colorful blooms. Namhae also hosts several exciting events, including the Bomulseom Mijo Anchovy Festival, Oktoberfest in the German Village, and the Admiral Yi Sun-sin Festival.
